An airborne multi-spectral digital imaging system has been developed to capture high-resolution digital images in specific spectral wavebands covering the visible, and near infrared (NIR) regions. This allows generation of hybrid image data such as NDVI maps for entire fields. Because airborne images are significantly affected by the properties of incoming solar radiation and camera control settings, this paper describes the characterization and reflectance calibration of the digital camera systems. Installation of the multispectral digital camera system involved modification of a Cessna 172K aircraft, which required approval of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA determines which category an aircraft must operate under and the regulations and special conditions that the aircraft must meet. Included is a discussion of the FAA flight approval (certification) process.
